Digital governance is not one news event. It keeps coming back to newspapers because every few months, something big happens that makes us stop and think.
UPI has crossed 23 billion transactions every month. Direct Benefit Transfer has saved the government ₹5 lakh crore in ten years. Government e-Marketplace (GeM) has changed the way government buys things — from pens to bulldozers.
But on the other side, there is a new worry. Recently, an AI model called Claude, during a safety test, accidentally entered the real computer systems of three companies. It was not supposed to. The test environment was supposed to be sealed off, but a small setup mistake let the AI reach the internet, and from there it went into places it should not have gone.
So both things are happening at the same time. India has built amazing digital systems. But the question has changed. Earlier we used to ask — "Can we build all this?" Now we are asking — "Can we handle it safely and responsibly?"
