The committee noted that the Joint Staff had taken the theatrisation process to an advanced stage. A dedicated team of officers drawn from the Army, Navy and Air Force has been constituted under the Chief of Integrated Staff to the Chairman, Chiefs of Staff Committee, to speed the exercise up.
Studying other countries, consulting the Services
Three Joint Staff officers are studying how militaries elsewhere are organised, and are holding consultations among the three Services to streamline the reorganisation.
How coordination is meant to work
Under the proposed architecture, HQ Integrated Defence Staff continues to coordinate operational issues involving the theatres with the three Service headquarters, both during the transition and afterwards. Coordination between theatres, and between theatres and individual Services, is envisaged through a Joint Operations Staff.
What the whole exercise is for
The stated aim is a more integrated war-fighting structure, bringing the capabilities of the three Services under a unified operational command structure.
