Essay — “It is best to see life as a journey, not as a destination”

Topic: “It is best to see life as a journey, not as a destination.” — UPSC 2025 PYQ

Classification: Pure Type 1 — Philosophical / Abstract / Value-Based.

Why? The topic is a value-statement about how one should perceive life itself. There is no policy, no contemporary issue, no institution being questioned. The examiner is not asking “what should the government do” — the examiner is asking can you think about existence with depth?

This is the classic quote-essay UPSC has been slowly returning to; in 2025, nearly six of the eight topics were of this kind. Handling this format well is a make-or-break skill.

Literal meaning: do not chase a fixed goal as if reaching it is the only thing that matters. Instead, treat the very act of moving, learning and becoming as the point of being alive.

Deeper meaning: the topic is really about the nature of fulfilment and the meaning of progress. A destination-mindset makes life a waiting game — happiness postponed until “I get there.” A journey-mindset makes every step count — the person you become while walking matters more than the flag you plant at the end. It is also a comment on impermanence: in truth no destination is final, and every arrival is only a new starting line.

The trap: a weak essay will keep repeating the same idea — “enjoy the journey, don’t rush to the destination” — in ten different ways. That is a school essay, not a UPSC essay. The examiner wants layered thinking: how the same simple truth plays out at the level of a person, a society and a nation, and where it also has limits.

• 2024 — “There is no path to happiness; happiness is the path.” Almost a twin topic. Same core idea — treating the process itself as the reward. Material used here transfers directly.
• 2023 — “Not all who wander are lost.” Also a change/journey theme, celebrating movement without fixed maps. The examples of explorers, seekers and creative minds carry over.
• 2022 — “You cannot step twice in the same river.” Heraclitus on impermanence — a philosophical cousin. If life is a journey, it is because the river of time itself never stops.
• 2020 — “Life is long journey between human being and being humane.” The direct thematic ancestor — the word journey appears in the topic itself.
• 2013 — “Be the change you want to see in others.” Gandhi’s line is really about journey — you do not arrive at a changed world; you walk it into being through your own conduct.
